Upholstery layer 1: British Alpaca – 1000GSM Hand teased (separated by hand) is the very softest natural mattress fibre which is notoriously rare. Alpaca is also the highest wicking of breathable fibres. Keeping you warm in winter and cool in the summer. It’s the most expensive natural fibre used in mattresses and upholstery. As Alpacas are only sheered once a year so their exquisite pelts are highly sought after.
Upholstery layer 2: Swaledale Wool – 1200GSM his gold-certified wool comes from the Swaledale sheep over in Yorkshire. The sheep are sheered, then the pelts are cleaned and then processed on traditional needling machines. All carried out in traditional by hand methods. This wool is incredibly durable, high wicking and has a really high loft meaning less compression over time in your mattress.
Upholstery layer 3: Horsetail – 1200GSM provides the secondary spring unit to the Legacy and gives it the deep medium feel comfort. This is cleaned and then braided here in the UK, this braiding gives the horsetail its spring when it is then teased by hand into a pad.
Upholstery layer 4: Organic Flax – 1000GSM provides the perfect mattress ‘Insulator’ layer. This insulator gives an even surface for the fibres above to rest on. Made from 100% plant fibre it is breathable and incredibly resilient which helps give the Legacy is 15-year guarantee.
Side Panel – 1000GSM British Wool upholsters the side panels which is hand side stitched.
Support is provided by 2508 (2 tiers) [56mm] [1.40mm] Calico encased Vanadium Coated Pocket Springs.

Our John Ryan Artisan Pocket Spring bases are 12″ in depth plus 2″ for Shepherd Castors making them 14″ in total.
Spring edging can be looked upon as a mini mattress between the main mattress and the base. It offers progressive support that dampens the strain of weight from the user. This significantly improves the overall comfort level of a mattress. This difference in comfort is often described as ‘Softer’ which is quite an incorrect term to use.
The drawers on the Artisan bases are 32″ wide, 20″ deep and 7″ high.
You can have 2 or 4 drawer options. If using bedside tables you may want to have 2 full size and 2 continental drawers so the drawers next to the bedside tables can be opened fully.

Alpaca wool is used in the very top upholstery layer having been reared here in the UK before being carefully handwoven. This super-soft layer is supported by Gold Certified Swaledale Wool from Yorkshire. Before the horsetail layer gives careful resistance to the sleeper. Topped off by an Organic Flax insulator layer to act as a gentle bridge between the calico encased vanadium coated pocket spring system and 100% natural comfort layers.
There is no worry of excess heat building up as both the Alpaca, Swaledale Wool, Horsehair and Flax plant fibre are all incredibly breathable.
