Choosing the Right Fabric for You

When selecting a fabric for your bed base, there are a few key factors to consider. So before you dive into choosing the “best looking” one, remember that the fabric you pick can impact how warm or cool your mattress sleeps, how much noise it makes when you move around, and how well it holds up over time.

Here are as few things you should consider:

  1. Durability
Choose a fabric that will hold up well to daily use and wear, especially on areas that get more friction (like the base). Durable options include cotton, linen and polyester blends. Keep in mind that more delicate fabrics like fine wool may require more care, making them less suitable for bed bases or headboards that are used constantly. Ideally, you want to strike the right balance between durability and maintenance so that your bed base and headboard has a longer lifespan.
  2. Breathability
Prioritise breathability in your choice of fabrics for a lighter and more comfortable sleep. Opt for airy materials – such as cotton and linen – that will stay cooler for sleep. Fabrics like polyester, microfiber and chenille tend to retain heat more, so consider your sleep temperature preferences. If you’re looking to keep cool during the night, a cotton base may be the way to go.
  3. Texture
Our fabrics range from smooth suede to nubby chenille. Consider whether you prefer an ultra-soft touch or a cosy texture for your mattress to sit on. To experience the feel firsthand, reach out to us at [email protected] to request our fabric samples. This allows you to assess the tactile qualities and choose the texture that suits your personal comfort preferences.
  4. Allergies
Allergies and sensitivities are at the top of the list for some when it comes to picking duvet sets and pillows. However, they’re sometimes overlooked when choosing a fabric for bed bases or headboards. If you have known sensitivities, opt for hypoallergenic materials to minimise the risk of irritation. Fabrics like microfiber (or those treated to resist allergens) are usually a safe bet as they are safer and kinder to the skin. Natural fibres like cotton and bamboo viscose are hypoallergenic, whereas synthetics or blended fibres may irritate those with sensitivities.
  5. Look
In addition to the above considerations, the visual appeal of your bed is undoubtedly a factor as well. Each fabric brings its own distinct look and feel to the overall aesthetic, so factor in the colour, pattern, and texture of the fabric to ensure it aligns nicely with your bedroom decor. Whether you prefer a sleek and modern appearance, a cosy and traditional vibe, or a bold and vibrant statement, the right fabric choice plays a key role in achieving the desired look.

Cotton & Linen

Cotton and linen are both natural fibre fabrics that are breathable and can help to regulate temperature for a cooler sleep when used in mattresses. Cotton tends to be softer to the touch, while linen is more textured. When picking, tailor your choice based on the level of comfort you want and your preferred texture.

However, with bed base fabrics Cotton and Linen are very rarely used. This is because they are expensive and are not as durable as other fabrics that can deal with the wear and tear of a high-use piece of furniture.

Chenille

Chenille is soft, velvet like fabric made from piled yarn. It’s a great option for bed bases as the piled texture – which provides extra cushioning – adds warmth and a cosy feel to the bed so you can comfortably sit up in bed against the headboard. Not only is it comfortable, but it’s extremely durable and withstands daily use. Maintenance is very easy as well. It is fade and wrinkle resistant and there is minimal piling once washed. However, if you’re a hot sleeper, you may opt for a different fabric, as chenille retains heat and can cause overheating.

Faux Suede

Faux suede is a synthetic microfiber fabric that’s designed to mimic the look and feel of genuine suede leather. As a bed base fabric, microsuede is most commonly used as an affordable synthetic version. It mimics the velvety texture of genuine suede and it adds a luxurious, cosy feel to the bed. Though it’s not as supple as real suede, faux suede is more affordable, durable, and easy to clean. It is flexible and repels liquids well.

If we have to pick one downside of faux suede it’s pilling, since the delicate surface nap can fray with friction over time. Faux suede also absorbs body heat, possibly making it less ideal for hot sleepers, but a great choice for the cold sleepers! For those wanting a napped texture without the higher cost and care of real suede, faux suede can make an indulgent bed base fabric.

Faux Leather

Faux leather synthesises the appearance and texture of real leather using polyurethane or other plastic derivatives. As a bed base fabric, faux leather gives you that sleek and stylish look (if that’s what you’re after!). The vinyl surface is waterproof and protects from spills and stains. It’s durable, but still soft to the touch. Maintaining it simply involves wiping it down with some conditioner to prevent cracking. It’s probably not the best option for hot sleepers, though, as it’s not super breathable. However, if you want your bed to have a modern and eye-catching aesthetic, faux leather could be the one for you.

Baize

Baize is a velvety woven fabric which is actually commonly used for pool tables. However, for bed bases, baize has a smooth and uniform finish with a spongy feel, giving you the cushioning you need for comfort and support while in bed. Its durability is noteworthy, and it maintains its texture even after cleaning. However, it’s important to be mindful of potential pilling, which may occur easily due to friction. Despite this, baize is a great option if you’re looking for something durable, comfortable and visually appealing.

Wool

Wool is an utterly fabulous bed base cover. However, it’s the most expensive material for a bed base and is only used on high-end mattress brands like Hastens and Savoir beds. It has a super-soft texture and can be woven with intricate patterns like basket weave or herringbone to take your bed base to the next level. Again, prohibitively high costs mean that you very rarely find a wool bed base in a UK high street or retail environment. However, we can craft our bases in any wool fabric as a bespoke offering, so please get in touch.
