9 stone with back problems please help with mattress

Marina asked
27th October 2013

I have back problems and weigh about 9 stone. I am looking for my first ever mattress!

I have slept a couple of nights on a tempur mattress and found it incredibly supportive but unsettlingly warm. I tried out several mattresses yesterday and my favourites were the Feather and Black Fitzgerald (tension 5) and the John Lewis Angora (Medium). I then tried the Tempur Cloud and my back and all my joints felt very supported however I am very worried about the heat issues. Would you advise buying a Tempur plus a natural topper OR a springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring bed plus a Tempur topper?

Many thanks for you help, Marina >

Hi Marina.

It’s very difficult to do comparisons against mattresses that are constructed using completely different methods – eg; Foam (Tempur) v Traditional (Harrisons).

The models you have been looking at (Fitzgerald and John Lewis) fall into similar categories mainly because they are from the same manufacturer.

As a comparitor, I would say our Artisan Bespoke would also fall within this particular category.

I am not a particular fan of Tempur for many reasons (mainly for the exorbitant pricing strategies for what is essentially foam) , but I do acknowledge that this type of construction can be more suitable for some people than a traditionally sprung mattress.

The heat issue you experienced is of course the downside to any predominantly foam mattress but can be remedied by lower tog duvets, and natural toppers which will allow more airflow between you and the mattress.

Your bodyweight at 9st will not require extensive support (although I take into account your back issues) and with this in mind I would be inclined to sway you towards the traditional pocket sprung mattress (utilising the medium tension spring) rather than the foam.

16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)

Hope this helps and please feel free to question further.
