Advice on dual springs for different bodyweights

Alex asked
28th May 2012

Hi, My partner and I are looking to buy a superking mattress but there are concerns about the type of mattress we should go for. I am about 5’5 and weigh between 11-12st and my partner is over 6 ft and about 19st. I also have back/neck problems!

He is keen on firm mattresses while I would prefer good support but a more comfortable feel…dilemma!

I wondered if you could advise me on the suitable springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring count for a bed and whether a pillow top bed at 2000 spring count would solve the problem!

Grateful for any advice!!

Thanks. .

Hi Alex.

A bit problematic but certainly not insurmountable.

Firstly, there is no mattress currently out there that will be perfect for you both unless you go down the dual tension spring route.

You have to understand that your hubby’s requirements are completely different to yours, so knowing what the compromises are and the options available will help.

At 19st his main priority is the spring support whilst yours is the comfort layers.

By sleeping on dual spring tensions (one half medium (for you) and one half firm is the only way to satisfy you both.

The comfort layers will be adequate enough to give you the cushioning comfort, but also right for the other half.

I would however add a topper below your bottom sheet as a means of reducing wear on the primary layers.

Facts of life dictate that your husbands side will be under more duress than your side.

Doing all you can to keep the mattress as new as possible means you wont be going through this bed buying process any sooner than you need to.

Initially I would look at The Artisan Naturals (Our pride and joy) if this exceeds your budget than your next alternative will be The Artisan Tailored Pocket (we can adjust it to suit you both).

Please give us a call / mail to discuss further.

Kind Regards Gary
