Advise on an alternative to the Bed Tailor Tranquility

Cath asked
9th October 2015

Please could you advise on a new mattress. Our current mattress is pocket sprung Bed Tailor Tranquility 1696 springs on a divan base. When my husband turns over in the night it wakes me up coz i feel the movement! We are buying a new king size bed with a slatted base. We’ve tried some mattresses out and there is a 2000 springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring with a pillow topper which felt really comfy but I’m worried it won’t feel like that for long as it gets squashed down! I’ve seen (but not tried) a 3600 pocket sprung pillow top…. What is the advantage in the higher spring count? I have back problems. I weigh around 11 stone and hubby is about 13. Thanks for your help

Hi Cath,

Thanks for your enquiry.

Many people are swayed by the suggestion that a mattress has a greater number of springs in fact, the higher spring count in some ways is a red herring as 1000 springs are usually sufficient to provide enough support for the average body weight on a king sized mattress.

What you have to bear in mind is that the additional springs will more than likely take the place of upholstery layers, but will not necessarily provide the same level of comfort.

I would not recommend anyone to buy a mattress with a pillow top for the exact reason you state and instead of just being able to replace the topper, the whole mattress needs to be changed.

With your body weights I would suggest that you opt for a medium tension mattress and in particular our Origins Pocket 1500. You could, for the purpose of preventing disturbance when your partner moves, opt for a zip and link set and if your budget allows.
