Alder 3250 pocket spring contributing to sciatica problems

Kerry asked

Great website and information, thanks! I’d appreciate your thoughts though please. I purchased a Harrison Alder 3250 pocket sprung double mattress (medium firmness) in August 2014 as my previous mattress was past it’s sell by date! I have a good slatted base which is in good condition so no problems there. However, since I’ve slept on the mattress it has been uncomfortable, and I now realise has been causing/contributing to my hip and sciatica problems. I sleep on my side and experience pain and tenderness on my hips and shoulders, obviously the pressure points. I went back to the retailer as the mattress is evidently too firm for me (female 57kg) to see if a mattress topper would be the solution. He thought not. Is it worth trying one, and as the mattress is of wool and cotton construction, should I stick to the same materials, or try a memory foam/latex type one? Thank you.

Hi Kerry,

Contrary to what you were advised by the retailer, we would suggest that the appliance of a topper is the best way reduce the firmness of a mattress.

Unfortunately, the description of the Harrison Alder 3250 is somewhat lacking when it comes to the upholstery layers as it does not disclose the GSM (grams per square metre) of the materials used, it only describes them in very general terms.

I did note that it is sold in a gentle (soft), medium and firm tension and I wonder why, if you have advised the retailer of your issues, they have not suggested exchanging it for the gentle tension.

If they do not offer a replacement, your only option will be a topper and as the mattress has natural fillings, you are best opting for a natural fibre topper.

We do not sell such products and would suggest that you try Soak & Sleep who have a range of such toppers.

Hope this helps, If you require any further assistance please call the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
