Allergic to memory foam?

Mrs C asked
22nd July 2012

We bought a Calypso by Apollo from Bedlum Beds 5 years ago. It is pocket sprung with memory foam. My husband is convinced he is allergic to something in it, maybe the memory foam, as he gets dizzy and sweaty, but then he spends a couple of nights in the spare room and recovers. He has also had bad eczema-like symptoms since we got the bed. Initially we put it down to cement dust from building work, now we are not so sure. We don’t know what to do since it would seem a pity to throw out a perfectly good mattress only to find later it wasn’t that at all. But we can’t think of anything else. We are thinking of getting an all natural mattress which will cost a fair few bob. Have you heard of anyone being allergic to memory foam?

Hi Mrs C,

Thanks for your question.

It’s difficult to narrow this down definitively; It could be that he’s allergic to the memory foam but similarly he could be allergic to the fire retardants used to treat the mattress.

All mattresses have to follow UK standards for Fire Retardants; Please see the link here for further information.

It might be worth checking a company online called Allersafe. They retail mattress encasements that go around the whole mattress and are zipped to help eliminate allergies. It could be worth using this to see if helps ease the symptoms before considering another purchase.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419. We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, Lee.
