TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Argos mattress comparisons

Hello After weeks of considering what new mattress to buy for our slatted base pine bed I found your excellent site.

Although we are not wealthy and on low budget I definitely took your advice, as per this page, to buy a pocket sprung mattress than a cage unit.

I found the following one yesterday online at Argos which suggested it was reduced less than half price (from £700 to £280) and then there was a 20% off promotion making it £224:- Airsprung Hush Tivoli 1000 Pocket Double Mattress – Argos cat no.

295/3698 Somehow I still think it was a bit of a sales con but probably the best I could get around that price.

I know it’s only 19cm deep (but that’s needed for our base) and is only a 1-sided.

Something that annoys me is the false description, like many other makers/sellers that it has “individual” pocket springs.

I accept they can be loosely glued or stitched together but a quick look on the makers website shows a video of the manufacturing process were they are made in a continuous joined ribbon of pocket-ised springs joined together down the whole sides and then layered and glued in the finished mattress.

To me, this appears to impede the design principal of pocket springs as pressing down on 1 spring will significantly pull on the adjacent pockets along the ribbon:- I would appreciate any comments on this mattress and price paid (£224) Kind regards, John >

Hi John,

Thank you for your question.

I find it hard to believe that this mattress was ever sold for £700.00 as there appears to be very little by way of upholstery layers and it is not likely to be very comfortable.

A springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring is a case, usually made of fabric that encases a wire spring. These cases are either stitched or in cheaper models, glued together to create a length of individual springs that are connected. This enables a sleeper to be supported independently by each pocket spring. It’s great to prevent movement between sleepers and will enable you to have far greater support than a cage sprung or open coil mattress.

The highest quality pocket springs will be calico encased and the spring wire will be vanadium plated. This enables the springs to breathe and prevents heat build up.

This system of pocket springing with attached springs is tried and tested and as stated, if there is little upholstery, the comfort is likely to be compromised.

I trust that this helps but if you do require further assistance please telephone our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
