Avoiding that sinking feeling in a mattress

I am 5ft 5″ and 10 stone, and my partner is 5ft 9″ and 11.5 stone. We both are side or back sleepers and prefer a firm feel to a mattress – can’t bear that sinking feeling – though with a bit of softness on top! Whenever we have tried a “medium” mattress in a shop it has felt awful and far too soft. Simon has been getting back pain from our bed – he likes the Premier Inn bed – that seems ok for his back. Our budget is not huge – maybe 800 including a topper if we need one – for a king size, but we would happily get one of your outlet mattresses if that meant we got more bang for our buck. Any suggestions?

Getting the right feel and support is vital with a new mattress. It’s helpful to know you have found mediums all a bit too soft.
However, what surprises us is that the Premier inn mattress which has a super soft and troublesome pillowtop, more on that here, has been your favourite!
Though we get a lot of people wanting a hotel bed feel, but we always advise that whilst hotel beds are super soft and squishy making a few nights stay very comfortable, if you had this as a permanent bed it would prove far too soft causing back issues. So we would carefully advise you keep that in mind.
Given your weights and the feel, we would advise looking at our Artisan 1500 in a medium tension.
It is on the slightly firm side of medium in the top comfort layers but will have some give to cushion you.
It is just over your budget but if you have a look at our Outlet you may see when we have any in stock.
The Outlet stock sells like hot cakes which is why we ask you to have a look directly on that part of the site as we update the stock daily.
I’ve checked just now and we don’t have any in at present but keep checking back.
We would recommend a medium spring tension for both of you so either a one piece or zip and link in a medium spring tension.
