Which base for Octaspring Hybrid Plus mattress?

Firstly, your website is fab! So informative and written in user-friendly English. Wish l had come across is sooner! Re. my question, I have recently purchased the above Octaspring (not yet delivered) for my elderly basic king size pine bed. It has solid flat slats but despite assurances that it will be suitable for this new mattress I am somewhat concerned, belatedly, it may not feel as comfortable as it did in the shop where l tried it on a divan base, and so now l’m looking to buy a new bed as well. From what I’ve read it sounds like a sprung edge divan would be a good option. I have chronic back problems, osteoarthritis and am a side sleeper, so a ‘soft feel’ is rather important though at the same time the base needs to have a decent support. I am 13 stone and 5’5″. Unfortunately money is an object, especially since the mattress was rather expensive and l would need to go for something in your basic divan range. What would you recommend? Many thanks in advance for your advice. Gabrielle

Hi Gabrielle,

Whilst I am aware of the Octaspring Hybrid Plus mattress, I am unable to say how it will feel on your current base, a new platform topped base or sprung base. I note that it is primarily a memory foam mattress and I cannot contradict the advice you have received from the retailer as to it’s suitability for a slatted base.

A platform topped base is likely to provide a similar feel overall to your slatted base, which compared to a sprung base will be slightly firmer.

Firm edge sprung bases, which are what we pair with our naturally upholstered mattresses are more expensive and before deciding whether you need to replace your current base, I would see how it feels in the first 14 days.

I would advise placing a barrier, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF over the slats to provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.

I trust that this helps,

Kind Regards Gary
