Bed and Breakfast mattress advice

Hi John,

I would like to thank you for such an informative website. My husband and I are hoping to buy a small bed and breakfast establishment in Devon. We will have 3 letting rooms, all quite small…it is a 300 yr old Devon longhouse…. We need x 2 5’bed frames with mattresses and x 1 6′ zip and link. The frames should be low slung to create the illusion of a more spacious room, Regarding the mattresses, we have tried loads in John Lewis and Furniture Village etc and really like the combination of memory foam and pocket sprung with a medium to firm support. Quality is a key element of our new business plan and we are aiming at the higher end market.

Do you have any suggestions we can consider?

Kind regards Sue

Hi Sue,

Thanks for getting in touch.

We would ask you to use caution selecting a Memory foam product as opinions are really divided. Its a bit of a marmite situation with some people loving it and others hating its heat retentive properties and the fact that it seems to collapse after 12 months or so.

We usually recommend the Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 for guest houses and B & B’s due to the fact that it covers a wider range of body weights, a medium spring tension with a firmer comfort layer. Whilst no bed is going suit a child and a rugby player equally this is the best option for a comfortable nights sleep for the widest range of body weights. I have these in my own guest room for this reason!

Artisan Naturals mattressThe coolest sleep surface is provided with natural fibres.  In our Artisan range, I would suggest looking at either the Artisan Naturals or the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000.  If you go with a medium spring tension, this will cover most adult guests body weights and still be comfortable for any little nippers.

We would all like to wish you the best of luck with your new business venture. If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Ryan and John
