TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Bed sizes, toppers & firmness

Zakloh asked
6th January 2016

What firmness? Our mattress is 20 years old & literally made from concrete. It was purchased as very firm (my wife believed that a firm mattress would improve her back ache) mattress, but is now rock solid … so much so that I cannot sleep on my front. I am 6ft 3 & 100 KG, while my wife is 5ft 11 & 70KG. I enjoy hotel beds that I can sink into, my wife prefers a firm mattress with a topper.
What type of topper? We currently share a super king size, but are thinking about two doubles. Is it possible to buy one topper to cover two doubles? Is it easy to link these doubles together? Which topper would you recommend?
Are the beds assembled at home by me? Are they ikea beds? Will you be able to remove my existing mattress? My wife suffers from allergies (asthma), are any of your beds suitable?

Hi Zakloh,

I note that your body weights are just under 16st and just under 12st, which would normally be best suited with a medium feel mattress.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

It used to be that if you had back issues you ought to opt for a firm mattress, however, the current advice from organisations such as the Institute of Chiropractors http://www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk/time-to-change-your-mattress-244-news.aspx contradicts that advice.

The fact that your wife prefers a firm mattress with a topper would indicate that she finds firm too firm and again would be more suited to a medium at the outset.

The question regarding the joining of two double sized mattresses is a little more difficult to answer.

It is not a standard product made by us or any bed manufacturer, however, we can make such a product but as it would be a bespoke size (8ft wide x 6ft 3in long)

It would not be covered by our 60 day love it or return it guarantee, and would have a cost implication.

I am not aware of anywhere that would make such a bespoke size one piece topper, you may need to purchase 2 double sized toppers and sew them together. Such a product would only be available in our Artisan range.

The issue of the bases is something that would cause further difficulty, as it would require the ability to join two normal double sizes together at points where no joining points are readily available. All our bases are divan bases and manufactured for us.

We do not sell anyone else’s products. If you wife suffers from allergies, then one of our Contemporary (Latex & Hybrid Foam) products may be more suitable, although these cannot be made to join together.

I hope that the above is of assistance to you, but if you have any further queries, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
