TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Which bed?

Nichola Pettman asked

I’m female, 13st 9lbs, sleep on my side mainly and like to feel not much pressure on my hips and shoulders. Sometimes I lie on my back and like to feel flat (no hammocking!) I find that medium beds feel too soft when I lie on my back, but firm beds give me dead arms and pins and needles. I have a sprung slatted base on which to put the mattress. I bought a John Lewis Natural Collection Linen 4000 Firm mattress after trying different beds for about an hour in the store and, although it felt fine at the time, I can’t sleep on it as it’s too firm. JL won’t exchange it which leaves me with a loss of about £800 so it’s destined for eBay. The bedstead needs a mattress of about 25cm to look right, but that’s a lesser consideration. Which of your beds might fit the bill please?

Hi Nichola,

Thank you for your enquiry.  The first thing I would say is that with your body weight, I would never have suggested or sold to you a firm spring tension mattress. You fall right in the middle of the body weight range which dictates a medium feel. The firm mattress you have will only tend to aggravate any issue you have with dead arms and pins and needles even though you have it on a sprung slatted base. It is a pity that John Lewis will not allow you to exchange the product, but hopefully, you will get something back through eBay.

16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

All of our mattresses are around 30cm in depth, which will in time settle to less, but even so, they will not be quite as low as 25cm, although it may be a reasonable compromise for you to make to obtain the correct mattress. I assume that because you opted for the John Lewis Natural Collection, you would ideally like natural upholstery layers rather than synthetic, not that there is anything wrong with synthetic, they are less expensive, but in our products, retain the quality. Please view the details of the Artisan 1500 in a medium spring tension, which has a mixture of natural and synthetic upholstery, although if you are happy to go for a wholly synthetically upholstered mattress, the Origins Pocket 1500 may suit.

Something else to consider is that we recommend that you place some form of barrier between your mattress and the slats, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF, which provides the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevents ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats. The downside of this is that it is likely to make any mattress placed on it feel slightly firmer.

I trust that the above is of assistance to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.
