Benson for beds

Moira asked
4th August 2016

We looked at some beds today in Benson for Beds, and found that the bespoke collection by Staples, Grandeur divan bed set seemed to be the best for us. I preferred the medium firmness rating, whilst by partner preferred the firm firmness rating. However, I am concerned about the pillow type topping and comments on your site advising not to buy a bed with a topper attached. Could you recommend which model of divan bed you supply would be the closest match for us please. Thank you.

Good Morning Moira,

Thanks for your question.

We do advise to avoid any pillowtop mattress; There are a number of reasons for this but the main one’s being that pillowtops are one sided mattresses and once the fabric compresses, which we hear a lot of feedback that it does very quickly, there is nothing that you can then do with it.

As such we’d always advocate purchasing a mattress and a completely separate detachable topper. Initially, we do advise to try any new purchase for at least 4-6 weeks to get a true feel for the mattress alone. If after that period you are indeed finding it to be too firm then look at introducing a topper at that stage.

Pocket Springs Explained:

With every pocket sprung mattress there are 2 elements to it; The spring tension and the fillings. The spring tension is determined solely by body weight as this is what provides you with the support. We’d need to know your body weights in order to discuss spring tension with ourselves as these guidelines will differ between retailers. Once the spring tension is determined you can push this to one side and concentrate on the fillings as this provides you with the comfort.

As such, it’s only the spring tension that can be altered; The fillings remain exactly the same regardless of the tension.

With you advising you preferred the medium firmness I’d guide you to the Artisan Naturals. This is a true medium in the top layers providing a slight sink in sensation but not too much.

With your partners preference I’d be inclined to guide him to the Artisan 1500. This is a medium in the top layers but slightly towards the firmer end. However, there will need to be a level of compromise here as you will need to decide on the one model.

Choosing the right mattress base:

You then have the base to decide on; The base can make a difference to the feel of the mattress. Any sprung base will give the mattress a slightly softer feel whereas a platform top, sprung slat or solid slat base will give the mattress a slightly firmer feel.

With our Artisan Base you can choose a Pocket Sprung unit or Bonnel Coil unit. This will add the softer feel to the mattress. You then have our Origins Platform Base, Contemporary Platform Divan or Ottoman Base that will all give the mattress a slightly firmer feel. Checkout our mattress bases guide here for more detail.
