Best mattress for bad spine injury

Kate asked
22nd September 2012

Hi there, like many people who’ve posted here myself and my husband are very different heights and weights. He is 6ft 4 and weighs 121kg and I am 5ft 6 and weigh 70kg. I have recently been in a car accident and am suffering from awful whiplash down my entire spine but especially my SI joint. I have really noticed the lack of support that I have once my husband gets into bed, especially if he tries to come over my side (he is a cuddly sleeper – I am not – but a hug and roll is not that easy…) Anyway, after 9 years of a bed that needed replacing after about 3 we are looking to buy something new. The superking size zip and link seem to be the answer… but not sure which one… don’t know if we could afford some of the listed ones but wondered if you could point us in the right direction… We can stretch to about £700/800. I think the base we have with the right mattress/es on top would work. (We did try a mattress topper from ikea for a while that helped, but especially with my injuries I really want to get it right this time!) Any help would be much appreciated. Really enjoyed what I’ve read on here re prices, content of mattress etc. Really easy to read and makes loads of sense!

As an aside, I have a latex allergy, but from what I’ve read it appears it should be encased in something so would it still be ok for me…?

Many thanks in advance P.S. I checked our sprung base today just to make sure and that’s pretty much bust at one end, so it would need to be the whole set unfortunately for our budget!

Hi Kate.

11 stone (You) and 19 stone (hubby).

And a budget of £800 for the entire set.

Plus special requirements for back trouble ..

what can be done?

Ideally, it would have been our Artisan Tailored Pocket as the minimum for your requirements, but this does stretch your budget by £1000 or so.

The first option is to consider utilising your current base till funds improve.

Bases that are partnered with low-mid range mattresses are a very basic construction and can in no way be deemed as anything more than that.

There are plenty of affordable bedframes on the internet that will offer you (your husband really) a more sturdy support than an equivalent priced Divan Base and so I would be inclined to look for these.

See here for a good example.

Of course it will be up to you to make the frame a bit more sturdier ie.

adding some MDF and cushioning and so on.

The cost of this frame will be in the region of £150 which leaves you about £650 for the mattress.

In this case, and taking into account your husbands weight your best choice will be the Origins Latex Ziplink.

very well upholstered with a total of 8cm on the spring unit.

I would also be inclined to reuse your current topper to add a further element of cushioning to the mattress.

This will no doubt aid your back considerably.

Unfortunately, people tend to get toppers when the mattress is on the way out.

using the topper as a protective layer to a new mattress extends the lifespan considerably.

I know all this pushes your budget above your plans but it would be false economy to purchase something like our Origins Reflex particularly as your requirements and needs make it completely unsuitable.

You could also opt for the short term measure by purchasing the frame and buying a cheap vac packed memory foam mattress for the support element, coupled with your existing topper or indeed a new topper (as the comfort) to cushion your back.

Finally, it is unlikely your latex allergy will be triggered by the mattress.

The proteins in the latex that cause the reaction are well and truly washed out during production and as all latex for mattresses will be blended in one way or another further reduces the likelihood.

Hope this helps Kate.

John and Ryan.

Hi John & Ryan, Just wanted to thank you for your response to my previous post.

Apologies for the delay in saying so, our little boy has been poorly and its exhausting dealing with a poorly little one!

We have given a great deal of considereation to your comments.

The latex mattress you do was my mattress of choice initially, but when I realised our base was gone obviously that affected the budget.

Thank you for the link, and your suggestions re bed frames, etc.

We really want to get things right this time, so we are going to hold fire for a minute as ideally we want to get the mattress you suggested but with the base you do too.

My husband is awaiting holiday pay from his previous job, so once we receive that we can push the budget up a bit and get the whole set from yourselves.

Whilst I appreciate that the Artisan mattress would really be ideal, it would be such a long time before we could ever afford it (we don’t do credit) we’d end up stuck with what we’ve got for longer than I’d care to imagine!

Thank you again for your assistance.

Kind regards Kate & Jason OK Guys.

At least you know where we are when you’re ready.

Johnn and Ryan.
