Best mattress for lower back pain

Martyn Bennett asked
4th January 2017

We are thinking about changing our king size mattress. I suffer from arthritis, have had right knee replaced and will have my left hip replaced in March 2017, followed by the other 2 joints in following years. I also suffer from lower back pain and shoulder pain which interrupts my sleep. I am 5ft 7in tall and weigh between 10 1/2 and 11 st.
My wife also suffers from some leg pain and sciatica; she weighs about 8 1/2 st and is 5ft 3in tall.
What type of mattress would you recommend?

Hi Martyn,

Thank you for your enquiry.

When advising upon a new mattress the main consideration is the body weights of those using it as this will determine the correct spring tension required to support those weights. In your particular case, we would suggest a medium for you and soft for your wife. It may well be that some of your aches and pains are being caused by your current mattress if the spring tension is incorrect as too soft or too firm can have similar consequences when it comes to interrupting your sleep. No mattress can guarantee a total solution to your aches and pains, but by opting for the correct spring tension and upholstery you can minimise the risks.

Such mattresses with a split spring tension are available in our Artisan range in king size and above in a one piece or zip and link set. Please view the Artisan Naturals, the best seller in the range, the Artisan Bespoke 004 and the Artisan Bespoke, all of which have natural upholstery and can have the spring tension selected to suit. The Naturals and Bespoke 004 will provide a similar feel in the upholstery layers with the former having 85% natural fibres and the latter having 100%. The Bespoke, on the other hand, has 100% but more in terms of the GSM in the same area providing a slightly firmer feel, even with the spring tensions selected as detailed above.

We trust that the above is of some help to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards.
