TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Best mattress for tall, slim, but broad shouldered?

Ian asked
26th September 2017

I am 6’4″ and about 12.5-13 stone, with quite broad shoulders. I usually sleep on my side, but I like to lie on my front as well. I recently purchased a firm hovag mattress from ikea, but it’s been giving me terrible lower back and neck pain. What’s even more ridiculous is that I just went on holiday for a couple of weeks, sleeping in hostels and budget guesthouses on a variety of cheap, open coil mattresses (or occasionally just sofa cushions) and was completely fine – then I get back and I’m in pain again after the first night. I think I’m ready to cut my losses and donate the ikea mattress, so I’m looking for a replacement.
I’ve typically favoured a firmer mattress. I’m aware the advice for side sleepers is to go softer, but I tried the medium hovag before exchanging it for the firmer version as the softer one was giving me even worse pain, and was very uncomfortable when lying on my front. Can you recommend which of your mattresses you think would be most appropriate? In terms of budget I’m probably looking at the Origins range, although I might be willing to spend a bit more if there is something particularly ideal.
Thank you.

Good Afternoon Ian,

Thank you for your question.

At the body weight given we would match you with a Medium spring. The spring tension is solely determined by a person’s body weight as you need this to give you support from inside the mattress.

You are correct about the advice for side sleepers – You should be steering clear of anything too firm in the top layers as it will only serve to cause pressure points in places such as hips, knees and shoulders.

With other companies it becomes a bit difficult to comment or compare with them as they don’t fully disclose their construction information to us. The only information I can find online for Hovag for example is that they are a pocket sprung mattress and come in feeling Medium/Hard.

We compare the Premier Inn Hypnos mattress with our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress. The Premier Inn mattress is designed to be a great all rounder as it can accommodate a vast range of body weights. Our Origins 1500 is more medium overall so not too soft or too firm but gives a great level of support. Ours is different in the sense that it doesn’t have that in-built pillowtop top layer. We’d always advise against these because once the fabric compresses there is nothing you can do to salvage the mattress.

As such, we’d always recommend a completely separate detachable topper that you can also flip over and rotate.

If you did want something firmer in that range then the Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 or the Origins Pocket 1500 Latex have that firmer top upholstery giving a more supportive feel.

Our Artisan Bespoke is the firmest model that we offer but without knowing your specific budget could just sit outside it.

I hope that this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries then please don’t hesitate to contact the office on 0161 413 2714.

Kind Regards, Lee.
