TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Best mattress for two different sized people

Elizabeth asked

I am looking for a decent quality king sized mattress for less than £1000, ideally a good chunk less! For the first year or two it will be used by my husband and I but after that it will become a guest bed, when we plan to buy ourselves a new bed on a slightly higher budget. We are quite different sizes: my husband is 6’2″ and weighs 85kg and I am 5’3″ and weigh 56kg. Bearing in mind that it will become a guest bed, is there a single mattress type which would suit both of us? The base is slatted and we prefer the firmer end of medium level of support.

Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for your enquiry via our website. With your weight differential, I would advise a split tension mattress, however, these are only available in a one piece mattress in our Artisan range. Please view the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000, which should be selected in soft spring tension for you and a medium for your husband. This mattress has a slightly firmer spring unit meaning that a soft spring will give you more of a medium feel and medium will give a slightly firmer feel, but still within a level suitable for your body weights.

If you intend to use your current slatted base, I would suggest that you place some form of barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF. This will provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.

I trust that this helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
