Can I use a mattress without a topper?

I want a kingside mattress I am 9 and a half stone and 5foot 3 inches I find mattresses too hard I was going to buy a v spring because I read they were the best but happened to sleep on one when I was at a friends and I was awake all night in pain from the hardness of the mattress a friend has a softer v spring and she says it’s still firm I don’t know where to go or what to buy I do like a soft mattress when I put a topper on a mattress I’m always happier although I read they are not good for your back I don’t want to have to put a topper on a bed I want the right mattress You can see I need help >

Hi Margaret, Thanks for getting in touch and sorry you’re not getting on too well with ‘harder mattresses’.

Firstly I’ve never seen any evidence that a topper can cause a bad back.

A badly supporting mattress has been linked to aches and pains; exacerbating bad backs if you will.

All a topper will ever do is soften a mattress as it adds another layer of upholstery to the mattress.

I’m not sure of your budget so I’ll give two recommendations.

For your weight I’d recommend you look at either our Origins comfort 1000 mattress, which is our softest starter model but you may still need to add a mattress topper or the Artisan Luxury in a soft spring tension which is the softest mattress that we produce.

You should not need a topper with either of these mattresses, however, if you bought one and wanted to soften the mattress further then this would be fine.
