Can you make recommend a Hypnos comparison mattress?

Rich Drakekey asked

Hello. I’ve been looking at the Hypnos Ruby/Cirrus pillow top mattress and was wondering whether you could recommend an equivelant in your range? The specification I’ve managed to source is as follows:
The pillow top provides a sumptuously soft and comfortable cushion of Wool, Silk and Solotex luxury cushioning above the supportive mattress.
This No Turn mattress features a ReActive 8 springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring system.
Upholstered with layers of non-allergenic white fibre, covered with the finest Belgian Damask to provide an exquisite silky sleep surface.
Tailored with 2 rows of genuine hand side-stitching for extra edge to edge support, and hand-tufted for longevity.
Available in Medium tension only.
I would prefer a natural filled mattress and I have taken on board your feedback that it might be better to buy a separate mattress topper. I tried the Hypnis mattress in store and it felt really comfortable.
I weigh 11 stones and mainly sleep on my side. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your question about a Hypnos mattress. If I can be blunt it would help if we started by translating the description into real terms which will hopefully help you to compare to one of our mattresses! Ok, ready? Let’s get translating.

Pillowtop – This is where a soft layer, like a topper, is permanently attached to the mattress. We have written extensively about why you should always avoid these. They are usually the first part of the mattress to fail and when they do that’s it, game over for your entire mattress! You’re much better off with a separate removable topper. Also, the description of the fibres is meaningless without knowing the GSM and weights of said fibres. The Hypnos Premier inn has one as well, theres a no holds barred review here!

This No Turn mattress – This is the one sided mattress scam! The only one sided mattress you should accept is one with a foam or latex top layer as the construction method means these have to be one sided. For a traditional pocket sprung mattress, you should only be looking for a fully turnable mattress. Unless its half the price, don’t accept half the mattress!

Upholstered with layers of non-allergenic white fibre – This translates to polyester. Simple as. The Belgian damask again is a standard mattress cover fabric, without the GSM or fibre content it’s quite meaningless too. So we can establish the majority of the internal fibres are good old man made polyester.

Tailored with 2 rows of genuine hand side-stitching – This is where someone side stitches the mattress, it’s a traditional method. The link shows you all about this detail. You can see this in our entire Artisan Range. It’s a real skill and only a few high-end manufacturers do this. We’re actually surprised a mass produced mattress has this feature, it takes ages to do it by hand you see.

Summary: Really you’re going to need the GSM’s, spring gauge, filling volumes to make any like for like comparison as the translation shows, all is not always what it seems!

If you’re looking for Natural Fibres Rich then have a look at our Artisan Naturals mattress as a starting point in a medium spring gauge. This mattress has vanadium coated calico pocket springs, is hand side stitched with 2 rows of stitching. Its 85% natural fibre and all the detail about the GSM’s is listed on our site. There’s loads more details about the product in the shop for your perusal.

Have a nosey and then maybe get back in touch to discuss the mattress and alternatives with our small friendly team. You can call us on 0161 437 4419.

All the best and we look forward to hearing from you.
