TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Carpet moths eating natural fibres?

Tina asked
6th August 2015

Our mattress is nearly 10 years old and is no longer comfortable so we are looking for a new one.
When we moved into our current house, we discovered a carpet moth problem, we have dealt with it as best we can but in the knowledge that some may remain we have avoided natural fibres as much as possible.
Do you have mattresses which don’t contain natural fibres? (does such a thing exist) If not are your mattresses treated in some way which may help avoid a problem?
My current mattress is pocket springs with memory foam, it was wonderful for me when I first got it. However I have since married and my husband finds it a little soft. We also want to eliminate as much transfer of movement through the mattress if possible. Is there anything you could recommend? (we are approx 8 and 11.5 stones)
Thank you,
Tina.

Hi Tina,

Thanks for your question.

Moths are attracted more to fillings such as wool predominantly found in naturally filled mattresses.

As such you are usually best in these situations going for a mattress with synthetic fillings (Our Origins range).

However, this doesn’t limit your choice as you could purchase a naturally filled mattress (Our Artisan range), that gives a cool sleep surface, but then use a mattress encasement from a company such as Allersafe. The encasement zips around the mattress and protects from allergies or anything like moths.

For the elimination of motion transfer between springs you might be best looking at a Zip and Link mattress. These are available from King Size upwards and give you 2 separate mattresses that zip together but the movement doesn’t occur as they are 2 completely separate entities.

At your body weights you could opt for a dual spring tension mattress; One half Soft for you and the other Medium for your husband but this would only be available in the Artisan range. If you opt for the Origins range they start with a Medium tension as minimum. However, if you yourself prefer a bit more support then you could also choose the Medium tension as well.

The only mattress that we construct with pocket springs and foam is our Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 mattress. This has a firmer feel in the top layers but we get lots of feedback that it’s very comfortable at the same time.

Alternatively in the Artisan range it might be worth having a look at the Artisan Naturals. This is a true medium in the top layers giving a slight sink but not too much and is also our best selling model.
