Choosing the right mattress
What a breath of fresh air the information on your website is! You don’t mention the impact a base has, however. When choosing a mattress, how much does the base type matter? If the bed frame has a sprung base, this presumably will make the whole feel softer as the mattress isn’t resting on a uniform flat surface. Should we be looking for slightly firmer mattresses as a result? We are a 9 stone lady (5’5″) and a 14 stone man (6′) who have struggled to find the right combinations. Our Superking Millbrook pocket sprung did us very well for 10 years on a hard divan, but was too heavy to turn and is now sagging a lot on my side. We have pretty much decided that two singles in a super king bed is the way forward, but current ‘luxury medium’ just feels like I’m in a dip all the time (not good for the neck & shoulders!). We need something with enough padding to prevent pressure/compression on my wife’s hips and shoulders when sleeping on her side, but enough support for me. Any thoughts?

What base a mattress is placed on will have an effect on the overall feel. Flat platform topped bases tend to make the mattress feel slightly firmer, whereas, sprung bases will make the mattress feel slightly more forgiving. If you base is actually sprung slats, we would recommend placing a barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF over the slats to provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats. Because the MDF is thin it is still flexible meaning that you will still get a degree of spring from your base.
With your particular body weights, we would suggest that a medium spring tension/feel mattress would be more appropriate. The spring tension provides the support whilst the upholstery provides the comfort. We note that the weight of the one piece mattress will be of concern to you and so you are looking at a zip and link set. Because your wife is a side sleeper, we would suggest a mattress with softer upholstery layers and to that end would ask you to view the Origins Comfort 1000, which has a standard medium tension spring unit with soft man-made upholstery. Alternatively, if you would prefer natural upholstery, please view the Artisan Luxury, which can have the spring tension selected to suit and has layers of soft upholstery. If used with your current base with the addition of the MDF, both these mattresses would be ideal.
