Comparison to John Lewis Natural Collection Silk mattress?

Jon asked
10th August 2013

Hi there, would you be able to give an idea of what would be similar to the John Lewis Natural Collection Silk 12000 Mattress?

This was the best one we tried in John Lewis (we thought much better than all the others that were both cheaper and more expensive). But it’s £1800 and our budget is more like £1500 max. Thank you ,,, >

Hi Jon.

The only mattresses that are of a similar ilk to the John Lewis Naturals (Harrison Spinks) are either Harrisons / Somnus core range – such as Somnus Supremacy Viscount 12000, or Somnus Marquis 12000 or Somnus Legend 12000 etc.

Or The Harrisons Sapphire 12000.

Or Feather and Black Byron (11000 springs)…

These are the similar ones, but the downside is that they are all above your available budget.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

Without knowing your weights it becomes impossible to say whether the models you are looking at are the best options for your needs and requirements.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

As you now know the only difference between all the mattresses above will be just the upholstery elements.

The spring variances on all Harrisons / Somnus mattresses are invariably the same.

It is likely that whilst you were in John Lewis you tried many of Vi Spring models.

These are more easy to get similar versions of but again, the increase in price becomes out of your budget.

Based on the information we have so far, I would say The Artisan Bespoke 004 is among the very best you can get for this particular budget.

Use toppers to complement this to suit your own requirements and you will be sleeping like a log for years to come [Read here as to why] .

Also, see what £1500 can get you from Furniture Village / John Lewis / Dreams and Bensons.
