Comparison to Vi Spring mattress

David asked
30th December 2012

Hi, A very very good website. Very useful information. However, I am getting more confused now… Appreciate that this is not directly relevant to your own products but would be grateful if you could help. Basically there are two mattresses I have tried that I like, the Vi-spring supreme (and the John Lewis‘ equivalent version of newbridge), and the Fitzgerald mattress from feather and black. Both mattress are quite comfortable but difficult to tell the difference after lying on it for a short period of time. Also I don’t know if they will be as good in say 5 years time, considering the F&B only has 3 years guarantee. I had a lower back disc problem in the past and looking for supportive mattress. Is 5000 “HD” springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring better than the vi-spring 1475 springs?

Another factor is the filling, looks like both of them use natural fillings only so won’t be much different?

Thanks, David .

Hi David,

Thanks for your question.

I would tend not to describe any spring system as “best” over another.

However, with that in mind, HD springs tend to be a lot smaller than standard pocket springs. This allows retailers of HD springs to put a much higher spring count into their mattresses, often using this as a marketing ploy.

We advise that it’s less about the amount of springs but rather more about the fillings as the fillings give you the “comfort layer“.

As such this is why we always disclose the full details of all our products including spring count and GSM (Grams per Square Metre) of fillings.

For anyone with any sort of back pains should be avoiding anything that’s too firm in the top layers as this will simply exacerbate those pains. As such you need to be looking for something more medium or soft in the comfort layers to provide some sort of pressure relief.

We’d need to know your body weights in order to discuss spring tension as this will differ between retailers but our guidelines are below;

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

The Vi-Spring range is one that we compare with our own Artisan range; These are traditional pocket sprung mattresses constructed with natural fillings that provide a cool sleep surface; Ideal for anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper. We have 7 different models in this range with 7 different feels so it might be worth checking the range out here. Our Artisan range, similar to Vi-Spring is constructed using Calico Encased Pocket Springs, considered to be the epitome of high end pocket springs as they are fully breathable due to the encasement and move a lot more freely.
