Damp and mouldy mattress problems
Hi We have a memory foam bed on a divan base. The mattress is the most comfortable we’ve ever had, but, when we turn it the underside of the mattress and the top of the base is damp / mouldy. the whole lot has been replaced twice, but the same thing keeps happening. We have even had someone out to check the moisture in the walls of the room – not a problem. Would a slatted base solve the problem as the moisture would be able to dissipate?
If so, what sort would be best?
If not, have you got any other solutions?

Thank you for your question on our website. This is one we get asked about quite often. Mould is caused by excess humidity in the room. As mould spores are always present it doesn’t take much for them to grow and they thrive in temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. Combating the moisture in the air by either airing the room on a regular basis or by purchasing a dehumidifier will help. Drying clothes on the radiator in your bedroom should be avoided.
To get rid of the mould, firstly you should thoroughly hoover both sides of your mattress (even one-sided mattresses) and completely empty your vacuum to prevent the spread of the mould spores. With warm soapy water, use a damp cloth (not soaking wet) and with circular motions clean the mattress. Air out until fully dry, preferably in direct sunlight if possible.
If your mattress was a pocket sprung mattress then a slatted base (with gaps of 3 inches or less) would help solve the problem. With a memory foam mattresses, just as the mattress contours to your body, they also mould around the slats causing damage to the mattress.
