Deciding on the best mattress and base for us
We are looking to replace our whole base and mattress. We currently have a memory foam mattress on a slatted wooden base which has been comfy, but the mattress probably over 10 years old. Although it still seems comfortable I suffer from allergies and feel that we could probably do with a fresh mattress. We are after a king size bed and mattress. I’m about 9.5 stone and my husband is about 12.5 stone. We are looking for a medium firmness and would like to get a divan base with 4 drawers. We could spend about £1000 in total. Although you’re website is very comprehensive I’ve still got a bit boggled at where to start. So I would be grateful if you could give me some advice on which mattress to chose.

Thank you for your enquiry.
We do not make memory foam mattresses for the reasons outlined in this article. We do make natural latex and hybrid foam mattresses, but unfortunately, they would be outside your budget when combined with a 4 drawer base.
With your particular body weights you would be best suited to a medium spring tension mattress and to that end, we would suggest looking at the Origins Pocket 1500. This mattress has a standard medium tension spring unit together with man-made upholstery providing an overall medium feel. It is possible to use this mattress on your existing slatted base provided it is in good order and that you place some form of barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF over the slats. This will provide this double-sided mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats. This barrier ought to be used with any double sided mattress. If you are concerned about your allergies, you could purchase a mattress encasement, which will prevent any fibres filtering though and caused aggravation.
If you do decide to keep your existing base, your budget would enable you to purchase one of our hybrid foam mattresses and in particular, the Hybrid 4, which will provide that medium feel referred to above.
