How to determine the quality and firmness of a bed

Simon asked

Your articles provide lots of interesting material on making evaluations based on the materials and densities used.
What is your opinion on the following mattress make up:
20cm base layer of Bultex foam (38 kg/m3 – 3.5 kPa)
7cm layer of Sensus heat-sensitive memory foam (50 kg/m3 – 1 kPa)
2cm layer of polyester quilting (25 kg/m3 – 1.2 kPa)
How firm or soft would it be?
What is comparable in your range?
Just to clarify on my previous email the quilting layer should have said 250 g/m2 polyester… not 25kg

Hi Simon,

Thank you for your enquiry.

We would advise at 50kg in the 7.0cm memory foam this would make it very soft in the top layer. Anything less than 60kg in memory foam in our experience is super spongy. The base layer we presume is Reflex at 38kg that would be a very firm support unit. 33kg in Reflex foam is firm so 38 would be very firm. We would suggest that this mattress is firm in the support with a very soft memory foam on top.

Unfortunately we would not have a mattress in our range which is a direct comparison. Could you please telephone our office to speak to one of our advisers who will be able to determine from body weights and heights and preferred feel, the right mattress for you in our ranges.

We trust that this helps.

Kind regards Julie
