Does 100% latex smell? What are the agents added to it?

Sean asked

Hello,
I’ve had to return a combination latex and memory foam mattress as the smell made me unwell.
Unfortunately it was still present after a few months.
Does your 100% latex mattresses have a chemically smell? Do they off Gass alot like memory foam?
You say they are 92% latex, do you have more information on the 8% and what chemicals are used? For instance do they contain VOCs?

Hi Sean,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.

The latex used in our Fusion range does not have a smell per se, but everyone’s sense of smell is different and subjective. Some people say there is no smell others say they can smell a rubber or slight chemical smell.  The only additional element included is a foaming agent used to change the liquid latex to a solid. For this reason, you cannot actually buy Natural Latex in 100% form because it would be a liquid and would degrade so quickly as it would be a natural protein without the other agents to stabilize and set it. There is also a 1 cm layer of Graphite Latex for Fire Retardant regulations.  The covers for these mattresses are treated with a fire retardant which contains phosphorous and nitrogen and may have a slight residual smell.   If you’ve experienced latex to smell in the past I would advise you look at alternative materials.
