Dormeo memory foam mattress causing issues

Tracey asked
28th July 2015

Hello
I wonder if you can help…
About five years ago, I purchased a Dormeo 2+12 silver-technology memory foam mattress from Ideal World (I know!). They don’t sell it now, but here are the details:
From memory, I seem to remember it felt a bit too firm for me (I’m 5ft 8.5 inches and weigh about 8.5 stones, sometimes a little more — plus, I have chronic pain, mostly in my right shoulder and neck, but also in my lower back, hips and knees from various injuries (broke my lower back 7 years ago, all good now apart from pain), and illness (Graves Disease and also M.E. (CFS) and TMJ). So I popped on the-then 7-year-old Tempur 7 Mattress Topper, which is now in it’s 12th year.
To be honest, this combination has never really felt ideal, but I have persevered over the years. Now, though, the quality of sleep is so bad (a few hours if I’m lucky) that I need to do something about it.
Also, due to my illness my husband has to sleep in his own bed most of the time.
Ironically, at 6ft 2in and about 14st, he says that when he sleeps with me (on his side) on my memory foam mattress and topper combination, his hips hurt almost immediately…
BTW, my mattress and topper combo is on an old (circa 20 years) but good-condition wooden slatted base.
My question is…
Would you say that my set-up is totally wrong? Would you consider a different topper? Mattress? Or both? If so, which?
Any advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much.

Hi Tracey,

Thank you for your question.

It was once the case that if you had issues with your back you were advised to opt for a firm mattress. This now appears to have been BAD advice, we now advise to go for something with a medium upholstery, there’s further advice available here: http://www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk/time-to-change-your-mattress-244-news.aspx. A telltale sign that a mattress is too firm is when an individual is experiencing pains in there pressure points (shoulders, hips, knees).

Please take a look at our Artisan range. This is our natural fibre pocket sprung range that we compare closely to the Vi-Spring range. We are able to offer a split tension in this mattress to support two individuals at different body weights, the correct spring tension is determined by your body weight.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

The Artisan Naturals is described as the ‘true medium’ of the Artisan range, it is an 85% natural fibre double-sided pocket sprung mattress.

We do not offer memory foam mattresses but if you are interested in a foam mattress please take a look at our Hybrid range. Our Hybrid 4 and Hybrid 5 models are made up of a combination of foams. Hybrid 4 combines a triple layer mattress construction method to provide a truly supportive mattress with deep progressive comfort. This is a very deep mattress offering four combined layers to give you the most advanced hybrid foam mattress. This advanced mattress is a soft – medium tension. Offering an initial soft comfort layer before medium support. We compare our Hybrid range to the Tempur range.

I hope this helps but if you need any further assistance please give the office a call on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards,
Amy.
