Double mattress advice (slatted bedframe)
Hello,
Thanks for your hugely informative website – really helps to cut through the waffle when researching a mattress.
We are looking to replace a worn out mattress supplied by our landlord 4years ago when we moved in. It is on a double size sprung slatted bedframe.
The top end of our budget is about £1000. This would have to include the mattress, the cost of any fixes for the bed frame (MDF boarding / under-mattress padding etc), and any mattress toppers.
I am 81kg / 174cm and my partner is 61kg/169cm. We both sleep on our side or back.
We both tend to prefer a firmer feeling mattress. Although I’m not sure if that just means we like a mattress which is actually working properly! We both get a bit of upper back / neck pain which I don’t think is being caused by the mattress, but it probably isn’t helping.
We recently had a stay in a sheraton hotel and had a very comfortable night’s sleep on that bed, but I know that there aren’t any specs available for that particular mattress.I was hoping you could give some guidance on the following:
1. From your range, it seems like the Origins Pocket 1500 or the Artisan 1500 are our options? Could you advise on the difference in feeling between them? We are planning to go and look at some beds this weekend – are there any ‘showroom beds’ that would be comparable in terms of feel?
2. I know you have advised that people should cover slatted bases with mdf board. Is 6mm thick board sufficient for this and do you recommend the addition of a soft layer between the MDF and the mattress? If so, what kind of material should we look at – a cheap mattress topper (foam/other?) or something else?
3. There might be a slight access issue as our flat’s front door is at an angle to the building’s hall. Are the above mattresses a little flexible for getting around corners?
4. What would you recommend in terms of mattress toppers?
5. My partner gets mild contact dermatitis with latex. Does this mean we have to avoid any latex containing mattresses or does the manufacturing process for the foam or mattress mean that they are safe in this circumstance?

Our pocket sprung mattresses can go on to slatted bases. All we ask is that you check the gap between those slats and if they are more than 3 inches apart, you will need to put down some MDF or Hardboard. This does not need to be very thick, anything between 3mm and 5mm. We would however advise putting either a cheap duvet or blanket on top of the slats (if the gaps are small) and also on top of any MDF or Hardboard to protect the mattress.
The Origins Pocket 1500 comes with a medium spring tension which is correct for your body weights so you will be correctly supported. The mattress has man made fillings which gives the mattress a medium comfort layer. The fillings are what you actually lie on which are on top of the springs. This means that the mattress is neither too soft nor too firm.
The Artisan 1500 has 50/50 natural fillings and man made fibres which gives this mattress a medium to firm feel. We can make this mattress with a medium spring tension again to give you the correct support. This mattress can go onto a slatted base but it will firm the spring tension up slightly.
I would also recommend you have a look at the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000. This mattress has 85% natural fillings but as it has a more manufactured spring tension, this gives the mattress a slightly firmer support.
The difference between the Origins Range and the Artisan Range is that the Origins Range have man made fillings whereas the Artisan Range have natural fillings and with this brings longevity. The more natural fillings in a mattress, the longer the mattress should last.
As you have slight access problems at your flat, you would be better with the Artisan Range of mattresses as there is a certain amount of flexibity due to the natural fillings, whereas the Origins mattresses do not bend even slightly because of the way that they have been constructed.
With regard to mattress toppers, we would advise that you wait until you have received your mattress and have slept on this for a period of time before putting a topper on to the bed. You need to get to know what those new top layers of the mattress actually feel like and if the mattress still feels a little too firm after this initial period, then by all means add a topper. A topper not only protects your mattress but it does give extra comfort layers which you may not need.
With regard to Latex mattresses, your Partner should be ok with 100% natural Latex although I could not 100% guarantee this.
