I’m looking to buy a new king size mattress and have so far narrowed it down to a Dreams product called Flaxby Nature’s Dawn pocket sprung K mattress. What would your equivalent product be?

So the first thing to point out is that there’s sadly no discernable information about either the pocket spring gauge or how many layers and what GSM (gram per square meter) the fibres are within this mattress. These are the two key details you need to accurately compare a mattress – more on that here.

Flaxby Springs:

The spring count is a mix of both standard pocket springs and micro springs. We don’t use micro or HD springs as in our trials we found them to be of little use, other than to help get that spring count as high as possible for some retailers. This model is quite a most 2475 spring count.

We would imagine the mainspring count before the micro springs is around 1500 for a kingsize. Ideally, you would need to know which of the gauges below the model is using for its support.

Spring TensionWire diameter (Gauge)Weight Range
Soft1.2mmBespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium1.4mmUpto 16 stone
Firm1.6mm16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic1.9mm20 stone plus

At this price point, we would guess that they are synthetic spun bond pocket spring and not a calico encased pocket spring. This is due to the price point of the latter which usually reserves them for £1500-£2000 priced mattresses upwards.

The upholstery is listed as a firm feel so we would guess it’s a mix of firmer polyester and a cotton and wool blend. Given wools one of the softest fibres it would need a far firmer set of accompanying fibres to help give it the firm feel. The comfort feel is always provided by the upholstery and not the spring tension as many shoppers incorrectly think!

One sided mattress niggles:

The biggest niggle with this firm feel Flaxby mattress is the fact it’s one-sided. Meaning you’re always sleeping on the same side. This can lead to a faster than normal settlement because you can’t turn the mattress over. We would always avoid this where possible as it really does limit the lifespan of your mattress.

What compares to the Dreams Flaxby Mattress?

The closest match we have in terms of feel is our Origins Reflex 1000 two sided hand made pocket sprung mattress.
We would recommend that the Origins Reflex is the best model to give you that firmer feel with plenty of edge support. Given there is a perimeter bar and firmer spring row surrounding the mattress.

It’s also two-sided meaning you can use both sides. It will give you a comfortable but firmer feel in the top upholstery layers. However, the Dreams mattress guarantee is one 1 year whereas this model has a 2 year guarantee.
