Equivalent bed to Santiago with Geltex

Aaron Wiltshire asked

Hi My wife and I like the feel of a Sealy bed in Bensons, the Santiago, 2200 springs? 1400 pocket the rest smaller springs, 60mm geltex top etc
What bed do you sell that would have a similar feel? and what costs for a superking?
My parents have recommended you to us, as they have bought two beds from you!
And do you know what Geltex actually is? and how long it will last?
Thanks for your time to answer my question

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for your question.

We don’t actually have a stand-alone equivalent to this mattress as we don’t sell pillowtops. This is because pillowtop mattresses are notorious for compression and failure very quickly as a very soft topper is permanently stitched to the mattress which you can’t turn. Once this pillowtop dips, which in many cases it does, that’s it, you’re stuck with it. We won’t design any mattresses where this can happen.

The Santiago is a medium feel with a soft geltex layer. Which leads on to the question of ‘what is geltex?’  The only details that Sealy provide on Geltex are the sleep triangle. This lists the benefits of geltex as being

  1. Breathability
  2. Pressure relief
  3. Optimal body support.

Sounds good, apart from the fact this provides you with no information on how to compare this foam. Meaning that without the density, hardness and depth of the foam its impossible to compare. Bensons list the topper as 60cm, but is this with or without the cover?  Most manufacturers add 2cm, 1cm for each side, for foam toppers. Which we find a bit underhand. Our toppers, for example, come in 7.5cm before covers, so are more like 8.5-9cm deep.

I’ve trialled a geltex mattress and in all honesty, it feels very similar to our Laygel which is a 60kg density hybrid foam which is super responsive and not as heat retentive as memory foam. I can’t hazard a guess at how long the foam will last, however, the fact you can’t turn or flip the pillowtop means you’re only ever going to sleep on one side of it.

If you like the feel of Geltex or hybrid foam, which is the material classification that Geltex would sit under. Then I’d recommend you getting one of our deep laygel toppers and matching it up with one of our Origins range mattresses, such as the Origins Pocket Reflex 1000. This means that you can turn both parts and rotate them so you’re never stuck with a sagging pillowtop. It will far outlast any pillowtop mattress.

It would come out in the price range of the Sealy Santiago but in our opinion would be significantly more durable given the fact you can turn it. It also means that if in years to come you want to replace the topper to either firm up or soften the comfort layer you can do without replacing the entire mattress. Both parts come with taped edged seams.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419. Our office is open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, Lee.
