Existing divan: motion transfer – purchase anew?

David Byars asked
27th June 2016

Thank you for your advice that zip and link pocket sprung mattresses will help with the issue of “reducing the disturbance as a result of one party moving during the night”.
I had said previously that my duvet is just over 20 years old, but I meant to say that the mattress (and divan base), not duvet!
My divan is sprung. Would whether a divan is sprung or has a solid/platform top affect the motion transfer caused by a party moving?
The current mattress and divan set is very springy/bouncy. Could this be as a result of the mattress and divan being 21 years old? The question is really whether we should be replacing the divan along with the mattress?
Assuming your king size zip and link mattresses will fit our existing divan (I will take a measurement like you said, and then call yourselves), I was thinking of buying an Artisan Naturals king zip and link along with a mattress topper.
You said that “before purchasing a topper, you should try a new mattress for at least 14 days before deciding upon whether to purchase one, as it may turn out to be an unnecessary expense”. Thank you for this advice, but on your website you say that “mattress protection is something that every mattress and bed should have. It not only can help extend the life of your mattress but can also provide a much-enhanced sleep experience.”
I had been intending on buying a topper, but I assume if one does not then a mattress protector should at least be purchased?
Thanks again!

Hi again David,

Thank you for coming back to us.

The motion transfer you refer to is reduced because of the pocket springs, not as a result of whatever base you have. If your divan is in good order, there is no need to replace it at the point of buying a new mattress.

Although we do advocate using a mattress topper when necessary, a mattress protector is sufficient in the first instance to provide protection. If you do opt for a topper at a later date, this would provide you with a further comfort layer thereby making the mattress feel slightly softer.

I note that you intend to call our office with details of your base measurements and so we will be able to provide you with further information/advice at that point.

Kind regards Julie
