Finding out the GSM from John Lewis
Hi gents I’m really impressed by the knowledge and openness behind your website. It inspired me to try and find out about the GSM of the John Lewis mattresses we have been looking at – my girlfriend likes them and I quite like the idea of bying from a company without shareholders. We’re both quite light (haven’st stepped on the scales lately, but 12 stone-ish I guess?). I was looking at the pocket ortho 1200 or natural collection hempure 3000 at 150 quid more. Both are made by Harrison Spinks it seems so I called their offices as John Lewis didn’t know the GSM of the padding. Surprise, surprise Harrison Spinks said the ‘MD has decided not to give that information out’. Really makes me angry that they should expect me to cough up 500 quid and not to tell me what I’m buying. Have you ever heard of ‘hempure’. Do you have any idea how these compare to your Origins range?

Thanks for your question.
We know from experience that most retailers don’t disclose how they fully construct. As such, we then in turn struggle to draw any comparisons or offer any advice.
Unfortunately, this means that we can’t offer any advice on the GSM here.
We similarly struggle to compare anything with the Origins range other than the Origins Pocket 1500 as this has a similar feel to the Premier Inn Hypnos mattress. The only difference here is that our mattress doesn’t have the in-built pillowtop layer. We would always advise against pillowtops anyway as once these compress, which they do very quickly, there is nothing you can do with it.
As such we would always recommend using a completely detachable topper as you can then flip and rotate the topper as well as the mattress.
Alternatively, we have our Artisan range of mattresses that compare with the Vi-Spring range found in stores such as Furniture Village, Harrods, House of Fraser or And So To Bed. This range is a traditional pocket sprung one with natural fillings in the construction; Ideal for anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper.
We would need to know your body weights as well as sleeping habits and preferred feel in the top layers to discuss suitable models as we have 7 different models with 7 different feels.
