TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Firmness of bed that would be best for myself and wife.

I am looking at the Artisan Natural or Artisan Bespoke 004 in King Size as a replacement to our current mattress. The current mattress is a a pretty firm one bought from John Lewis many years ago and is currently on a wooden lattice bed base, which makes it a little more firmer than when it was on a sprung base. I prefer a firm bed my wife prefers a softer feel. I am 11st 10Ib my wife is 10st 10Lb. Looking at your information on selecting the most appropriate level of support and firmness, would suggest we go for a Medium Sprung mattress. The Artisan Bespoke has slightly softer upholstery than the Natural so I am wondering whether this would feel too soft for me, and whether I should therefore go for a Firm Sprung Mattress in these beds and hope that the upholstery will be soft enough to give the softer feel my wife wants. Alternatively I could go for a mixed Medium and Firm sprung Mattress to match our different requirements. But I am concerned that adding this mixed springing might compromise the bed feel as you move to the centre and the junction between the two different springs. The final question is whether your beds have a firmer feel at the edge of the mattress than the Vispring mattress as I noted that there was a tendency when lying on one of these close to the edge to roll towards the edge. Not a major problem if you sleep away from the edge, but just interested to see whether yours would prevent this. My current mattress is firm right to the edge hence you can sleep right at the edge with no difference in feel.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Where to start? Firstly, with your particular body weights a medium spring tension is what we would recommend, however, the difficulty comes in matching the requirement in respect of feel. Both the Artisan Naturals and Artisan Bespoke 004 will provide the same overall feel in the upholstery even if the spring tension was selected as a medium. The Naturals has 85% natural upholstery and the 004 has 100%, which in essence is the main difference between the products. To clarify, at your body weight we would never suggest a firm spring as you do not have enough weight to utilise the spring correctly. Likewise, we would not place your wife on a soft spring as she will not receive sufficient support.

Artisan Naturals

If the level of upholstery is not an issue for you, we would suggest that you opt for the Artisan Naturals in a medium spring tension, which when placed on your current base may feel slightly firmer. As far as your base is concerned, we would always advocate placing some form of barrier, usually thin (3-5mm) MDF over the slats to provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats. This again will make the mattress feel slightly firmer and if this is then too firm for your wife, it may be worth investing in a topper to provide that extra comfort layer.

All our Artisan products have firmer springs around the edge to prevent that feeling of rolling out of this bed and also allow utilisation of the whole sleep surface.

We trust that the above is of help to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards.
