Heavier sleeper help choosing a mattress
Hi John and Ryan, I need help with what new mattress to purchase? Me and my partner are of heavier weighted people of 5 ft 3 and 17.6st and he’s 5ft 5 and 19.st are both side sleepers but my partner sleeps both on his side and back. Our current is a silentnight miracoil with pillowtop but the mattress has sagged in the middle and has given me severe shoulder problems and both of us wake up with lower back pain!. but with so many websites saying different mattresses we were looking into a 12″ memory foam? I wondered if you could recommend any mattress for us as we are unsure and don’t want to purchase the wrong mattress we have also purchased a spring mattress with memory topped but that only lasted a year. So as you can see were not having much luck.

Thanks for your question.
Firstly, I would not recommend memory foam as this is very heat retentive and is slow to respond meaning that when you move in bed it may feel like you are having to climb out of a hole.
Likewise, I would not recommend a pillowtop mattress as these are one sided and tend to have a reduced life span due to the failure of the pillow padding in the short term.
You are both on the heavy side and should look to buy a firm spring tension mattress with additional comfort being provided by the upholstery layers.
Side sleepers need to avoid anything too firm in the top layers to avoid causing pressure point pains in places such as hips, shoulders and knees.
As such you should be looking at something more medium in the top layers. Have a look at our Origins Pocket 2000 or Artisan Naturals (with a Firm spring tension).
