Heavy side sleeper looking for a Latex mattress

Alan Garfield asked
16th May 2017

I am 110kg 6ft tall and a side sleeper. I have had 2 new mattresses(not cheap) one a memory foam and the other a pillow top in past 5 years both waking up with shoulder and waist pains and feeling groggy.
Can you please recommend a soft but supportive mattress. Have not tried Latex but open to recommendations. Was recommended the Sealy Teranno but dont know if it is ‘Which’ hype.
PS Brilliant site

Hi Alan,

Many thanks for your kind words. We are really proud of the site and the help it brings people who are starting the troubled journey into mattress research! It sounds like you’re having a bit of a nightmare with your current mattress choice yourself Alan. Hopefully we can help with some mattress geek advice.

At your weight, you’re going to need a firmer level of support, even for a soft feel mattress. The required support of a mattress is usually dictated by weight and it is the upholstery or top layers that relate to the soft, medium or firm descriptors of mattresses. Our Fusion 4, for example, is a firm core but with a softer topper which should give you the feel you are requiring.

Pillowtops are dreadful in that they usually fail really quickly. This is because the pillowtop is nearly always super soft sumptuous material that has an alarming compression rate. More on that here. Memory foam also has a limited shelf life and unfortunately the heavier you are the shorter the shelf life as they compress super quickly under heavier weights.

Latex, on the other hand, is far more responsive and can ping back to its original shape far more than a conventional foam. This is because 100% Natural Latex is a form of rubber. Yes, rubber bands spring to mind (double pun, many apologies!). It is breathable so doesn’t suffer the same heat issues as memory foam and our Fusion range are all two sided so can be turned and rotated to extend their life. Latex is hands down a winner when compared to other foams.

The Sealy Terrano is a one-sided mattress with springs and a layer of mysterious innergetic latex in a pillowtop construction method. What is innergetic latex? Good question, as nobody knows. The data sheets have never been released so we can only hazard a guess that it is synthetic and man made. There is a vast section of detail on how amazing latex is, what t look for, what to avoid and what not. In a nutshell, 100% natural latex has the highest response rate, lifespan and breathability of all ‘latex’.

We would recommend you have a look at our Fusion range in particular the Fusion 4 mattress Alan, and if you have any further questions please give us a call on 0161 437 4419.

All the best

Amy.
