Help with Dreams Kiev slatted bed

Tom Traveller asked

Can you help with mattress selection?
Have selected Dreams Kiev sprung slatted bed,http://www.dreams.co.uk/kiev-solid-oak-bed-frame, (king size) and would like some help with mattress selection.
I am 1.86m and18stone. my wife is 1.7m and 11 stone.
My wife is used to a futon and likes a firm mattress. I probably prefer a medium to firm mattress.
I also have pains in my heels and hips so was thinking of a detachable topper as a firm mattress may compound this. Do you recommend gel type for breath ability?

Hi Tom,

Firstly with a slatted base you will need to board over the slats. This stops the mattress from conforming and sagging over time to the gaps between slats. We have an article here on how to do that, its cheap and easy to do yourself.

As for the mattress recommendation, at your weights we would recommend a split tension mattress. Given you have pains in your hip and heels our Origins Latex, which has a Natural Latex top, would help reduce pressure on you. We would advise this in a split tension of 1500 springs for your wife and 2000 for you. You can review the Origins Latex here.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

If your budget stretches have a look at our Artisan range, either the Artisan 1500 or the Artisan Bespoke in a medium and firm split tension. These both have a firmer feel in the top layer. The difference between the two is the Artisan Bespoke is 100% natural with a vanadium coated calico springs/” title=”pocket spring”>pocket spring and the Artisan 1500 is 53% natural fibre with a spun bond pocket spring. Both will give your wife a firmer feel and you a medium/firm feel in the top layer.

We wouldn’t recommend hybrid gels for breathability, obviously there are many different gels and foams. We only use high quality hybrid foams which we list here. It is worth bearing in mind that they retain heat and so if you want a truly breathable mattress you will need to look at natural fibres.

Have a look at the models referenced and then please get back in touch if you have further questions Tom on 0161 437 4419

We look forward to hearing from you

Kind regards Julie
