My Silentnight mattress is making a noise

Clare asked

Hi, currently trying to find bed & mattress for newly decorated bedroom Purchased a divan last year with SN Microcoil 3 mattress. Currently sleeping on this & although comfortable there’s a tiny annoying noise when I breathe in an out as i’m drifting off to sleep, possibly a spring although its not a squeak. Not a major problem but enough to make me want to ensure I get something bettter for the main room. I’m looking for a kingsize mattress & bed frame. Have seen a frame I like with sprung slats (a Birlea bed, “Tokyo”) but now worried that the sprung slats might make a noise. Have slept on fixed slats before without a problem. Interested in your Origins 1000 mattress. My questions are: 1) is your Origins 1000 mattress heavy enough to keep the slats down?

(Having posed that question I realise I don’t actually understand the point of sprung slats) 2) how long can I expect the mattress to last/continue proving support I am 10st, no partner to consider at the moment. Budget is small. Many thanks Clare .

Hi Clare.

It is important to understand that the Silentnight Miracoil 3 mattress you currently have is a budget mattress based around a cage sprung system.

I am not sure what the ‘sound’ you are hearing can be attributed to but there are plenty of comments throughout the internet of ‘squeaky’ springs from this particular mattress.

What is more interesting is your comment relating to sprung slats, a topic of late of which we have been prone to discussing to determine whether or not they are of any viable use!

Firstly, my own bedframe has sprung beech slats and apart from a couple of broken ones which happened as I stood on them they have not really posed any problem with the pocket sprung mattress I use.

The arguments re the usefulness of this kind of support are based on the following: The theory is is that they offer some kind of suspension for the mattress – a ‘benefit’ as pocket sprung mattresses do like a cushioning kind of support.  Hence the reason why all high-end pocket sprung mattresses are partnered with a sprung edge divan like our Artisan base.

The argument re usefulness can be called into question as it can be argued that sprung slats are cheaper to produce than the opposing solid fixed slats system.  In order to justify the reason of having sprung slats rather than fixed solid slats there had to be a ‘story’ to equate the two and the suspension aspect of sprung slats seems a reasonable justification.  However, pocket sprung mattresses as stated above like a FLAT suspension base, and it is this aspect that could call into question the correct marriage between sprung slats and pocket sprung mattresses.

I personally do not think there is currently a definitive answer to this – The supplier of these type of bedframes will say they will be suitable for PS mattresses – the suppliers of Sprung Edge Divans will say they are not.  Until there is a definitive answer, Ryan and I give the mantra that they should be supplemented with some sort of cushioning above the slats to prevent the humpback bridge effect happening to your mattress.  Maybe our article on the different bases may be of some help to you.

As for your choice of mattress for your budget (and weight), I would suggest the Origins Comfort 1000.
