TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

How does the Artisan range compare to John Lewis?

Phillipa asked
21st February 2012

We have just been looking at getting a new kingsize mattress and were looking at the John Lewis Natural Collection range. Then I found your webiste and was fascinated by the information it gives!

It answered a lot ot my questions about type of mattress, our weights, and finding the best for us. However, I was puzzled that your ‘top of the range’ mattress only had a couple of 1000 springs, but the John Lewis Natural Collection Mohair had 7000!

(Other models have more!!) But, your notes and article on springs sheds some light on the subject. I assume the count of 7000 includes the ‘spring within spring’ and the little HD springs too. As the John Lewis mattress is a hefty price, I wondered how you would compare your ‘Artisan Natural’ with this range from John Lewis – with its huge spring counts!?

Thanks for any info… Phillipa .

Hi Phillipa.

It still amazes me that people are still swayed by the number of springs in a mattress.

The spring count should become secondary to the fillings contained.

I would sooner have a mattress absolutely stuffed to the gills with just horsehair and wool (exaggerating a bit!) than a mattress using 7000 springs and just topped with horsehair and wool.

So springs are used to take the place of the fillings – more springs = less fillings.

Our Artisan Bespoke uses 1360 Calico encased, hand nested, hand formed pocket springs.

with premium fillings that total a massive 5100 GSM [Grams per Square Meter].

Vi Spring’s Chatsworth use only 1720 Calico springs [3250 GSM fillings] but retails at £3200 – considerably more than the Harrison’s model you mention.

Harrison’s don’t tell you how much fillings are used in their mattresses, perhaps there isn’t enough space left on their sales blurb after waxing lyrical about the number of springs they cram in.

If you are spending £1800 on this particular mattress you would want to know:

1.  How many revolution ‘Spring in Spring’ units are there?

2. How many mini HD springs are there?

3. Are you counting the Spring in Spring as two springs?

4. Precisely what is the breakdown and weights of fillings?

We compare our Artisan Bespoke to Vi Spring – certainly not Harrisons.

We look at the very best traditional UK premium manufacturers to see how the masters do it [Savoir Beds / Marshall and Stewart / Hastens (Sweden) ] Savoir do not use spring counts in the thousands, but their mattresses are deemed to be amongst the finest crafted [only an ignorant fool would argue against this].

You have raised an extremely valid argument Phillipa, and of course the above are only my opinions.

We do not want anyone taking our word at face value.

We encourage you to dig deeper before making final decision.

We even give you the questions you should be asking.

Our mantra is that every mattress should have the breakdown of all components openly and fully itemised in order for you to see for yourself exactly who is offering you the best for your money.

Please let us know how you get on.

Kind Regards Gary
