How firm is a firm mattress?

Hi, we have a mattress from John Lewis we bought 5 years ago (King size with 1,500 spring pockets). Start showing some signs of fatigue and we would like to upgrade to an Artisan Naturals model (Superking). Question is how firm is firm?

Current mattress is firm and we want to avoid mattress where we “dive” into. I’m 1.80m/85kg and my wife 1.75m hence need for good back support. Can you help me making sure we choose the right tension?

In reality, everything in the mattress, and your choice of mattress should be based on yours and your partners bodyweight.

Not an easy thing to do most of the time.

People tend to base their choice either on budget, on looks, or by thinking that because their previous mattress has become so soft they opt for a firm one when a replacement is due thinking that this is the right thing to do – completely wrong.

The Artisan Naturals you are considering can be made with a range of spring tensions.

We know what tension is right for you, coupled with knowing how the fillings affect the overall tension.

We would [initially] say that a firm tension spring [1.60mm] should be your ideal choice.

This takes into account the overall span of a Superking Mattress and your hint that you do not particularly like the softer feel.

I would also ask you to consider our Artisan Bespoke – our showpiece model, way outside most peoples budget, but built and priced to knock the socks off many high end models that retail at twice this price.

Finally, you really must ensure that you have adequate access to take a mattress of this size.

Both our Artisan models are extremely well built and extraordinarily heavy.

There is no room for undue movement (will not bend) and in our experience there are not many households that will take a mattress of this size.
