TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

IKEA bed frame and sprung slats

Ken asked

Hi,
I am looking for a double-sized bed (mattress + base/frame) to furnish the new home I am moving into. Mainly for cost reasons, it looks like a pocket sprung mattress is the way I’m going to go, many thanks for the advice given when I phoned in.

For the bed base/frame, I am looking at, among others, the options IKEA offers. IKEA offers 3 kinds of slats with their beds, all are sprung slats and going up in cost appears to get more slats spaced more closely together, based on the advertised count of slats they all have a spacing of less than 7.5cm.

What are your thoughts on IKEA’s bed frame and the sprung slats that they offer? Would the denser slats mitigate the issues your article wrote about with sprung slats? How does that setup compare with using a platform or divan base?
Thanks!

Hi Ken,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website IKEA bed bases are usually pretty sturdy. However, which type of slats they use may change the feel of the bed slightly. You can easily remedy this though.

When using a sprung slatted base, we would always advocate placing some form of barrier if the space between the slats is greater than 3 inches, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF or plywood over the slats. This is because when a pocket sprung mattress is placed over slats there is a tendency for the mattress to dip into the gaps between the slats, which in turn results in ridging appearing on the reverse side of the mattress.

This ridging can then be felt when the mattress is turned, as it should be regularly, whereas with the MDF such ridging is eliminated.  Furthermore, you would not get the correct support from your mattress and over time it will get damaged. In addition to the gaps, most slatted bases have a central bar, which itself can result in dipping or bulging at the centre of the mattress. This is again eliminated by the use of MDF.
