TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Is a mattress topper really essential?

Peter asked

Just Like Margaret Hutchison (Posted August 26, 2015 at 5:13 PM), I am confused. In one post you are saying the topper is essential and in another you are saying you may not need to buy one.
In some of your replies in this post, you suggest not buying a mattress topper until you are sure you need one.
However, in your post “Understanding your mattress” you state that “To sleep directly on a mattress without a topper is akin to wearing trainers without socks! It will not be too long before the mattress is stained and flattened beyond redemption. It seems absurd that 99% of all mattresses are sold under the premise that they are the finished product. Not true and there is no way that this can be deemed to be the case.” You then continue with giving many reasons why toppers are an integral part of your mattress.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your question and I am sorry that some of the postings have caused you some confusion.

We would always recommend simply using a mattress protector to begin with in order to protect the mattress.

We would then recommend only using a mattress topper after 4-6 weeks if you’re finding the mattress a bit too much on the firm side as a mattress topper will always introduce an extra comfort layer.

John himself prefers a topper straight away but there is no necessity to do this.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
