TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Is MDF moisture resistant

Andrew asked

Hello,
Very informative site! We recently purchased a heavy king mattress (approx 220lbs) and new bed which has a set of sprung slats. In researching everything from bunkie boards to low profile foundations, I found your post. We like the bed profile and want the sturdiness of a solid base but without the added height.
My concern with using either MDF or plywood is managing moisture/mold. We live in a dry climate in the states but sweat or other condensation through the mattress is an unavoidable reality. I really like the idea of pegboard (especially because it can be obtained finished and not require fabric or anything beyond cutting). However, the mattress store suggested that it isn’t quite sturdy enough to adequately support a mattress of our size and weight. Any insight that hasn’t been previously shared in other posts? Comfort is a big concern, but I am also concerned with protecting our health and the investment in our new mattress. Thank you in advance!

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your question.

That certainly is a heavy mattress!

That said if the pegboard is going on sprung slats it’s the slats that will be taking the majority of the strain not the pegboard. If you think of the pegboard as a distributor of the weight rather than having to support it that may help. I wouldn’t think there would be a problem with pegboard in this scenario.

Given humidity and moisture I’d definitely recommend peg board over say a solid wood that is unless you are going to actively turn and rotate the mattress whilst allowing it to air. Pegboard would reduce the risk of mould.

We always recommend, as part of our care and maintenance guidelines, turning your mattress once a month in the first year, dropping to every 3-4 months in the second year onwards, and always checking it for signs of any damp if you know moisture and humidity are an issue where your mattress is situated.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419. We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
