TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

John Ryan Mattress choice?

Hello jenpopew asked

2nd January 2018

Hi, I’m 5’5 my husband 6’1 and both about 200lbs though I’m overweight by about 40lb. We’ve a king bed, slatted wooden base, and for ages I’ve struggled with backache in bed. There’s no way I can sleep on my back, side only. Without fail, each year we go away the beds are brilliant compared to ours so time to upgrade! I think it’s just too soft or has deteriorated over time. Even when I was lighter this was the case though probably less so given the mattress would also have been newer. Usually, we go to Greece, US, where bases are usually firm / solid. Even UK hotel beds generally way better for me. My husband sleeps fine wherever. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello jenpopew,

Thank you for your question.

At your current weights you would need a dual spring tension – One half Medium spring for your husband and one half Firm spring for yourself. The spring tension is determined solely by body weight as this is what supports you.

Given that you’ve disclosed back ache issues we would always say avoid anything too firm in the top layers. I understand that this goes against your current preference but being a side sleeper with existing pains it will simply exacerbate those pains.

As such I’d be recommending going for something more medium or medium to soft overall. Our Artisan Naturals is our true medium feeling model and being constructed from natural fibres and materials gives a cool sleep surface.

Alternatively you could opt for the Artisan Bespoke 004, which is a medium model again but has 100% natural fibres as opposed to 85% for the Artisan Naturals.

If natural fibres isn’t a deciding factor for you then you could also look at the Origins Pocket 1500, which is again medium feeling but using synthetic fibres and materials giving a warmer sleep surface.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
