TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

What long-lasting mattress would be best for us?

Melissa asked
3rd August 2017

This is my first time buying a mattress/bed. I am looking for a double mattress for my husband (5ft 4″, 60kg) and myself (used to be 5ft 4″, 60kg… but currently pregnant). We are people that tend to use products well past their expiration. This is partly out of avoiding contributing to landfills and getting our full money’s worth, but also partly because life is busy and we are lazy. Keeping this in mind as I research and then buy, I am wondering what mattress you might recommend that has the best probability of still being ‘ok’ in 20-40 yrs time. Husband says he thinks he likes medium firmness. I am not sure for myself and frankly, don’t trust that my past or current opinions of comfortable sleeping arrangements will be valid in even the short future. Thank you for any advice or suggestions you can provide. Best wishes.

Hi Melissa,

Thank you for your question.

With the body weights provided you are both matched to the Medium spring tension.

Spring TensionWire diameter (Gauge)Weight Range
Soft1.2mmBespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium1.4mmUpto 16 stone
Firm1.6mm16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic1.9mm20 stone plus

The spring tension is what provides you with the correct level of support from within the mattress itself.

The main thing to consider after this is how you want the top upholstery layers, also known as the comfort layers, to feel.

Our Artisan range is made from a differing percentage of natural fibres and materials and as such generally have longer guarantees than our other ranges.

Please see the link here for full details of all our mattresses and their guarantees.

Our true medium feeling mattress in the Artisan range is the Artisan Naturals. Similarly, the Artisan 1500, Tailored Pocket 2000 and Artisan Bespoke 004 are all medium feeling; I.e, not too soft nor too firm. There are simply slight differences in the feel of the comfort layers between them.

As part of maintenance and care, we always recommend that our mattresses are flipped and rotated once a month within the first year. This means that any wear and tear is being evenly distributed across both sides. Not only this but it also increases the lifespan of the mattress.

For example, the Artisan Naturals comes with a 10 year guarantee; With correct maintenance, this can easily become 10 years on each side of the mattress.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries then please don’t hesitate to contact us on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
