TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Which mattress would be best for hip pain?

Michelle Wilkinson asked
3rd July 2017

We are looking to replace our 9 year old Dreams Sleepeze Lincoln (3500 pocket sprung) mattress, which I have come to realise may well be the source of the hip pain I have been suffering on and off for a couple of years yet every night for the past month or so (which I may add, disappears upon getting up). Being relatively fit, exercising regularly and only being in our late 40’s/early 50’s, I am hoping that it is indeed the mattress! Our present mattress has been ok for years, but as with all mattresses, is now showing signs of age (aren’t we all?!), with dips in the middle and, being a super king-size, a huge ‘hump’ down the centre.
I am 5’5″, weighing approx 10.6 stones and my husband is 6′, weighing approx 13 stones. We both like a relatively firm mattress, although I accept this could well be part of the problem. Both of us tend to run warm on a night and for that reason have avoided memory foam mattresses. Could a latex or pocket sprung/latex be a possibility?
Having looked at various websites, we have been impressed by the wealth of information on your website and I would therefore appreciate your recommendations.

Hello Michelle,

Thank you for your question.

I have tried to find the Dreams Sleepezee Lincoln mattress and I think Dreams may still do this mattress but under a different name.

As you have mentioned that you are a warm sleeper, I would recommend that you look at the mattresses in our Artisan range.   These mattresses have natural fillings and therefore make for a cooler sleep.

As you have explained that you are suffering from hip pain which goes away once you are out of bed, it tells us that the mattress you are sleeping on at the moment is too firm and therefore causing pressure point pain.   At your body weights, we would recommend a medium spring tension which is going to give you both the correct support.   We would then look at the comfort layers of the mattress and from what you have told us, I would also recommend a medium comfort layer, not too soft nor too firm.

We would recommend having a look at either the Artisan Naturals or Artisan Bespoke 004.   Both of these mattresses have a medium comfort layer and feel very very similar.  The difference between them is the amount of natural fillings in the mattress, the Artisan Naturals having 85% natural fillings whereas the Artisan Bespoke 004 has 100% natural fillings.

You could also look at our Fusion Range of mattresses which are made of 100% natural Latex.   Latex is very good for pressure relieving as it molds to your body shape very much like memory foam although Latex is more responsive and not as heat retentive.   Our Fusion 3 has a medium support together with a separate topper which allows you to sink into the topper before hitting the support of the core mattress.  You would need a solid base for a Latex to sit on otherwise the Latex would form between the gaps on a slatted base causing major problems.   All the mattresses in our Fusion range are breathable therefore making them suitable for a solid base.

The Origins Pocket Latex 1500 is quite a firm mattress and is non-turn which means that you can only rotate this mattress.

If you have never slept on latex before, it would be better for you to go and try some latex mattresses as it is a totally different sleep sensation.

You mention that you have a super kingsize mattress that has developed a hump down the middle and this has happened because with the mattress being so wide, the middle of the mattress does not get slept on as you tend to pick your own sides of a mattress.   We would always advise that the mattress is turned and rotated on a regular basis and also that one of you tries to sleep in the middle of mattress so that all the sleep surfaces are being utilised.   Also a ridge can develop in a mattress if you are using a sprung slatted base.  We advise boarding a slatted base with MDF or Hardboard to stop this from happening.

We hope the above is of assistance to you but please do not hesitate to telephone the office for further information on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie.
