Mattress dipping and shoulder pain

Kevin asked
21st November 2016

Hi..I weigh exactly 14 stone and my wife 8 1/2 stone. Over the past year we have had 2 differing superking mattresses-a sleepezee approx £400 (medium firm) then a Hypnos £970 (firm). We have a drawer/divan base (hard base, not sprung). Within 2-3 months both mattresses have shown 2 dips approx 1-2 cm both sides where we sleep-these are apparent when you pull a sheet tight. We turned both mattresses as advised but this has made no change. I even try to lay in the middle where the slight raise has formed to try and flatten it down but it doesnt seem to have any effect! I know find that with the Hypnos firmer mattress that we have had for 3-4 months that I have a lot of shoulder ache/pain which i am now wondering is this due to the firm mattress? So, My questions from this are:1:- If I bought from you-WHICH superking mattress would you recommend I have (I have seen one which seems to fit what I am looking for because your website is very clearly written and very educational)-and would your recommended mattress sag in our 2 positions-and if so would you replace/refund within 2 months?2:- Do you think my shoulder ache/pain is due to our current firm mattress?I look forward to hearing from you very soon,Thanks Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Many thanks for your enquiry.

The first thing to say is that, when choosing a mattress, the primary consideration is the body weight(s) of the individuals using the mattress. This will determine the spring tension and in your particular case we would suggest a medium spring tension which will give you both the correct support.  We would never recommend or sell to you a medium/firm or firm mattress as this is totally the wrong tension.

The dips that have appeared in your current mattress are well within the industry standard and do not at this stage represent a defect in the mattress, but are what is described as natural settlement. As you will see from the article attached, all mattresses will experience dips where the users lie, which regular turning and rotating should eliminate.

As far as our 60 day “love it or return it” guarantee is concerned, this would cover any purchase from us, although we do endeavour to match the customer to the product and in 96% of cases we get this spot on, which is why we are confident to offer this guarantee.

In answer to your question regarding shoulder ache/paid, undoubtedly this is caused by the mattress you have being too firm. What is required is support from the spring unit and comfort being provided by the upholstery layers. Without knowledge of your current budget, it is difficult to make a specific recommendation, although we would suggest looking at the best selling products at the foot of this response and in particular the Origins Pocket 1500 and the Artisan Naturals. The Origins has man made upholstery and the Artisan has natural upholstery. The Origins has a standard medium spring unit, whereas the Artisan can have the tension selected as soft, medium or firm.

We trust that the above is of assistance to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419,

Kind regards Julie
