Mattress for a bedstead

Paul asked
19th April 2016

I have a Sealy Regatta Posturepedic Kingsize mattress (circa 25 years old) which is still very comfortable – however intend to relegate it to a guest bed, having bought a new bedstead. The Shop I bought the bedstead from sells Relyon mattresses – most with Toppers and reading your article struck a chord (re inability to turn them).
We did try a Firm tensioned Relyon (Newlyn Ortho Backcare) in the shop – but it was rather solid (!) We weigh 10.5stone and 9.5 stone repectively.
I’m reluctant to buy a memory foam topper as my partner is wedded to her half of teh heated blanket and I understand the two don’t mix well.
The new bedstead needs a mattress depth of around 12 inches or more to fill the frame depth (without looking silly).
Which mattress should we choose and noting you only sell foam or laytex toppers – should we look elsewheer for a wool topper to allow for the heated blanket ? With thanks Paul

Hi Paul,

Wow 25 years, that’s good going. Think that’s near the winner for the longest surviving mattress, well vs some of the original natural two sided latex models from the 50s which are still going strong!

Given your weights I’d be avoiding at all costs an orthopedic mattress, they are brutal and incredibly firm using 1.9mm wires making them punishing for all but the heaviest of sleepers, which you two are not! Given your mattresses age, I can make an assumption that it has become much softer than its original tension and softer than any orthopedic mattress. I’d need to know if you prefer a firmer or softer feel in the top layer to give a tailored recommendation but at your weights I’d be recommending a medium tension spring say a 1.6mm diameter wire. Any orthopedics at 1.9mm would be simply too firm and won’t react to your weights.

I can’t find any specifics on this mattress online which is a shame as it means I can’t give you a layer by layer comparison.

Given the price point of a king Relyon Newlyn Ortho Backcare being around £600-£999 (if you believe the sales and RRP that is, more on that subject matter here!). I’d recommend you have a look at our Origins 1500 which is a medium tension or our Artisan 1500 if you want to move to the next level of mattress construction which contains 53% natural fibre.

John Ryan By Design Artisan 1500
1500gsm Wool
2600gsm Rebound Poly Cotton (50/50)
3700gsm Polyester
4600gsm: Rebound Poly Cotton (50/50)
5700gsm Polyester
61200 gsm Cashmere Hair Pad as Insulator
71500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs (Soft/Med or Firm)
Total GSM4300gsm

All of our mattresses are 13 inches in the Origins and Artisan range so would fit nicely into your bedstead.

You’re right in thinking a latex or hybrid foam topper would not truly suit an electric blanket. They would become incredibly soft and I’m not certain how nightly usage of an electric blanket would fare with these products. However a wool topper or natural topper from elsewhere would be more than suitable. We do aim to release som natural fibre toppers but its still in product development at the moment I’m afraid! Like everything we prefer to take our time and find quality sources and hand made craft our items which means it can take us a little longer to release new products.

If you can get in touch with us over the phone on 0161 437 4419 with your bodyweights and heights we can further tailor the recommendation or email us on [email protected]. I hope that this advice at least gets you started in the right direction!

Kind regards,
Amy.
