Mattress help for possible Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ross asked
3rd March 2014

I was wondering if you could recommend a mattress for me.

I suffer with quite bad back pain (I’m currently going through tests where they’re trying to diagnose whether or not I have Ankylosing Spondylitis – which is a form of arthritis of the spine).

I weigh around 16 stone and am around 6ft in height.

I’ve been to lay on a couple of different mattresses today but to be honest I didn’t really trust the store and the sales people there (Bensons Beds and Carpet Right).

The beds I found the most comfortable for the few minutes I laid there were the following: http://www.carpetright.co.uk/icon-1200-essential-mattress-mattresses-1.html http://www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk/ortho-solution-mattress?variantSku=257300019 http://www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk/tempur-sensation-sublime-mattress?variantSku=312100001 I know they’re all pretty different in terms of price, however they all felt similar for the time span I spent on them.

After reading your advice to other people on your websites, I’d much rather hear from you which you’d recommend for me.

I’d be looking for a double mattress (I’m not fussed if it comes with a frame or not as my existing bed is only 18 months old but the mattress is a really cheap Silentnight one from Argos).

Also, if you could provide options at different price levels that would be useful, as it’s for me and my partner we could pay around £600 lump sum or pay monthly providing it’s interest free etc if spending more would be beneficial.

Sorry for the really long email, and I look forward to your response.

Thanks, Ross

Hi Ross,

Thanks for your question.

With the condition you disclose our advice is to avoid anything too firm in the top layers as this will only exacerbate the condition. As such we’d advise to look at something more medium or soft in the top layers. This is to give some pressure relief and not put any further pressure on the discs.

You might subsequently find that you also need to add a separate mattress topper but we always recommend trying a new mattress for 4-6 weeks by itself to get a true feel for it.

With ourselves and within our Origins range I’d advise you look at the Origins Comfort 1000 or Origins Pocket 1500. Within the Artisan range I’d advise you look at the Artisan Naturals or Artisan Luxury.

Our Origins range are traditional pocket sprung mattresses with synthetic fibres. If there are no heat issues during sleep then this range would be ideal.

Our Artisan range are again traditional pocket sprung mattresses with natural fillings. We would guide anyone to this range who identifies as a hot sleeper as the natural fillings provide a cool sleep surface.

The Origins Pocket 1500 and Artisan Naturals are true mediums in their respective ranges providing a slight sink but not too much. The Origins Comfort 1000 and Artisan Luxury are the softest mattresses in their ranges giving that full sink into the top layer; Please note that the Artisan Luxury is our softest mattress overall.

Alternatively we then also have our Hybrid and Fusion range. Hybrid is a range of full foam mattresses and Fusion is our 100% Natural Latex mattress range. Both these ranges will give pressure relief whilst providing a similar sink in sensation to memory foam but without the heat issues. The only models I would be comfortable recommending from these is our Hybrid 4 or Fusion 5 and 3.

My concern here would be that a lot of these products will sit well outside of your budget. With that in mind it might be worth having a look within our Outlet. The Outlet is home to items that have been produced and used previously. When they are then returned to us we grade and discount them accordingly. Please see below for some guidelines on the Outlet grading;

GradeDiscountDescription
B20%Will have been used by a customer and returned under the 60 night love it or return it guarantee, it may have a few marks from transit and courier handling.
C40%Will have been used by a customer and returned under the 60 night love it or return it guarantee, it will have quite a few marks and could even have a small tear, nothing detrimental to the life or use of the mattress.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419. We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, Lee.
